Ebike Pre-Ride Safety Checklist

Early detection of potential issues, such as low tire pressure or worn brake pads, prevents them from escalating into hazards on the road. It is recommended to perform the following checks before each ride and after every 25-45 miles of riding.

Component Category

Specific Item to Check

Action/Observation

Tires & Wheels

Pressure

Inflate to recommended PSI (on tire sidewall).

Condition

Inspect for wear, cuts, embedded objects.

Spokes

Check if they are tight and undamaged.

Rims

Check if they run true with no obvious wobbles or dents.

Quick Releases/Thru-Axles/Axle Nuts

Ensure quick releases/thru-axles are tightly secured. Verify axle nuts are tight, especially rear wheel axle nuts (check every 45-50 miles).

Brakes

Lever Feel & Engagement

Levers should feel firm and engage brakes before hitting handlebars. Ensure brake motor cutoff switches are working (motor disables when brakes applied) and brake lights operate.

Pad Wear

Visually inspect brake pads for wear and proper position.

Cables & Levers

Ensure brake control cables are lubricated and correctly adjusted; control levers should be lubricated and tight.

Battery & Electrical

Charge Level

Check battery indicator on display or battery itself.

Secure Connection & Condition

Ensure battery is undamaged, locked in place and contacts clean.

Display & Controls

Check for error messages, ensure buttons function correctly.

Electrical Cables & Connectors

Check all power cables are secured. Ensure electrical connectors are fully seated, free from debris/moisture, and unobstructed.

Drivetrain

Chain Lubrication & Condition

Ensure chain is oiled, clean, and runs smoothly.

Gear Shifting

Ensure chain runs smoothly through gears when shifting.

Derailleurs

Ensure the derailleur is unobstructed and undamaged; check shifter and cables are lubricated.

Cranks & Pedals

Ensure pedals are securely tightened to the cranks.

Frame & Fittings

Handlebars & Stem

Confirm they are securely tightened and correctly aligned with the direction of travel.

Saddle

Confirm it is securely tightened, correctly aligned, and undamaged.

Frame & Fork

Check frame and fork for any damage or misalignment.

Bearings

Check headset, wheel, pedal, and bottom bracket bearings for lubrication, ensuring no excess movement, grinding, or rattling.

Motor Assembly

Hub Motor

Check if it is spinning smoothly with smooth motor bearings.

Axle Bolts & Torque Arms

Verify hub motor axle bolts are secured; check torque arms and washers for damage.

Lights & Reflectors

Front & Rear Lights

Ensure headlight, taillight, and brake light are functioning.

Reflectors

Ensure they are clean, secure, correctly oriented, and visible.

Accessories

Bags, Racks, Child Seats (if applicable)

Confirm secure attachment, no interference with operation.

Fenders

Ensure fenders are properly secured and undamaged, and not touching the tire.

Ride Plan

Weather, Terrain, Duration

Consider these factors to ensure all systems (e.g., lights for dusk) are ready.
