Ebike Safety Gear

Appropriate safety gear enhances the rider's ability to see, be seen, maintain control, protect against injury and reduce accident risk.

The Basics

  • Helmets: A certified helmet is the single most important piece of safety equipment. It should bear CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), CE, ANSI, or SNELL safety approval marks. The helmet should feel snug yet comfortable, positioned about one to two finger-widths above the eyebrows, and the straps should form a 'V' shape under each ear. The helmet should not move significantly when the head is shaken. It is recommended to replace any helmet involved in a crash or significant impact, as its protective capabilities may be compromised even if no external damage is visible.
  • Lights (Front and Rear): A white front light with a minimum of 400 lumens is recommended (using a steady beam helps illuminate the path, while a flashing mode enhances daytime visibility). A red rear light with at least 50 lumens and multiple flash patterns helps ensure riders are seen from behind. Check the charge level before each ride. Vulcan e-bikes are equipped with integrated LED front headlights and tail-lights and riders can also add supplemental lighting for own their specific conditions.
  • Reflectors: Reflectors on the front, rear, pedals, and spokes should be kept clean.

Enhanced Riding Protection

  • Eye Protection (Cycling Glasses): These shield the eyes from wind, dust, insects, and road debris. Look for impact-resistant lenses, UV protection, a wrap-around design for full coverage, an anti-fog coating, and a comfortable fit that integrates well with your helmet.
  • Gloves (Cycling Gloves): Full-finger cycling gloves are recommended for superior grip and control, especially in wet or sweaty conditions. Padded palms offer shock absorption and can prevent painful abrasions in the event of a fall. Touch-screen compatible fingertips are a practical feature worth looking for.
  • Appropriate Footwear: Closed-toe shoes that provide good grip on the pedals are essential. Athletic shoes or cycling-specific footwear are ideal, avoid loose or open-toed shoes.

E-Bike Visibility and Comfort Clothing

  • High-Visibility Clothing: Wearing bright colors such as neon or fluorescent, or a reflective vest or jacket, dramatically increases a rider's visibility to motorists, especially during dawn, dusk, or overcast conditions. Reflective elements on moving parts of the body, like arms and legs, are particularly effective at catching drivers' attention.
  • Layering for Weather Conditions: Adapting clothing to weather conditions is key for comfort and focus. The three-layer system is recommended:
  1.
    1. Base Layer: A moisture-wicking fabric (e.g., merino wool, synthetics) worn next to the skin to draw sweat away.
    2. Mid Layer: An insulating layer (e.g., fleece, lightweight down) to trap body heat.
    3. Outer Layer: A protective shell against wind and precipitation (e.g., waterproof/windproof jacket). The thickness and type of layers should be adjusted based on temperature and conditions (mild cold, moderate cold, rain, snow, or heat).
  • Balancing Safety and Comfort: Safety gear should protect effectively without unduly restricting movement, causing overheating, or creating distractions. Comfort is paramount because uncomfortable gear may be neglected, undermining safety efforts. Ensure loose pants are secured to prevent entanglement with the chain or wheels.

Visibility to other road users, especially in low light

A rearview mirror is a bonus for enhanced all round awareness, and for those tackling more challenging terrain or new riders, protective clothing such as abrasion-resistant jackets and pants, knee and elbow pads, can offer additional security. The increased visibility afforded by appropriate lights and clothing directly reduces the likelihood of collisions with motor vehicles.
