Basic Maintenance Tips for E-Bike Longevity and Safety

Consistent, proper maintenance not only prolongs the e-bike's operational life but also directly contributes to its safe performance by ensuring critical components are always in optimal condition. This reduces the chance of equipment failure leading to an accident.

  • Unauthorized Modifications: Do not change or modify anything in your e-bike's electrical system, including the battery, digital controls, physical components, or motor train, as this will void your warranty and can cause harm.
  • Use Original Parts: The use of non-original or non-approved replacement parts may compromise your e-bike's safety and can void the warranty; such replacements are at your own risk.
  • Cleaning: Clean the e-bike regularly to remove dirt and grime that can accelerate wear on components. Wipe the frame with a moist towel and non-corrosive detergent, then dry thoroughly with a clean cloth. Clean battery contacts with a dry cloth. Do not grease electrical connectors, brake pads, wheels, tires, or plastic parts.
  • Water Exposure: Never submerge the e-bike or any of its components in water or liquid, as this can damage the hardware and electrical system. If wheel bearings come into contact with liquid, they should be removed and re-greased.
  • Chain Care: Keep the chain clean and well-lubricated for smooth shifting and drivetrain efficiency. Lubricate the chain, freewheel, and gears every 1-2 months with chain lube.
  • Brake Maintenance: Routinely check brake function, listen for unusual noises, and inspect brake pads for wear, replacing them when necessary. When brakes feel loose or excessively squishy check brake fluid level and fill as necessary.

  • Charger Voltage Compatibility: Carefully check that the input voltage of the charger is consistent with the voltage of your local power grid (most operate on standard home AC power outlets like 110/220 V, 50/60 Hz and may automatically detect voltage).

Charging Environment

  • Always be present when charging e-bike batteries. Never leave them charging unattended, especially overnight or while sleeping.
  • Place the charger on a flat, stable surface, ensuring its lights face upwards for proper cooling, and position it at least 3 feet away from other electronic devices during charging. Do not use the charger inverted.
  • The charger is intended for indoor use only, in dry and well-ventilated conditions.
  • Keep the charging area clear and away from potential tripping hazards.
  • Avoid using the charger in direct sunlight.
  • Never place anything on top of the charger or cover it when it's plugged in.

Handling During Charging:

  • Never plug or unplug the charger with wet hands.
  • Do not disconnect the battery output while it is charging.
  • Do not use the motor or perform maintenance on the e-bike while it is charging.
  • Never put any liquid or metal objects into the charger.
  • Do not twiddle or unnecessarily handle the charger or battery while charging is in progress.

Charging Process:

  • Fully charge the battery prior to riding to achieve maximum range and help prolong the battery's life.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper charging procedures, and unplug the charger once the battery is fully charged. Do not charge the battery for more than 12 hours at a time.
  • Only charge the battery within the recommended temperature range (e.g., 50°F - 77°F or 10°C - 25°C).

Damaged or Abnormal Batteries/Chargers:

  • Avoid using battery packs that have been damaged, modified, or repaired by unqualified personnel. Do not use batteries assembled with repurposed or used cells. Do not use a battery that is physically damaged, performing abnormally, or has suffered an impact; discontinue use and charging immediately and contact the e-bike manufacturer or dealer.
  • If the charger becomes too hot to touch, emits an unusual smell, or shows other signs of overheating, discontinue its use immediately and contact the e-bike manufacturer or dealer.
  • Do not open or tamper with the battery housing, as this will void the warranty and can cause damage, injury, or even death.

Battery Removal and Installation

  • Ensure the e-bike's display screen is off before removing the battery. Use the key to unlock it and remove it gently.
  • Avoid contacting the positive ("+") and negative ("-") terminals during transport or storage, and be careful not to drop or otherwise damage the battery.
  • When installing the battery, avoid forcing it into its holder. Align and insert it carefully, ensuring it is properly fixed and locked before each use (you can often check this by gently trying to lift it upwards).
  • Charger Cable Handling: When unplugging the charger, carefully remove the AC and DC cables by holding their plastic plugs. Do not stretch or pull on the cables themselves.
  • Storage (Long-Term): If storing the battery for an extended period, charge it to approximately 75 percent of its capacity and recharge it once a month to maintain this level. Store the battery in a dry, indoor environment within the recommended temperature range (e.g., 50°F - 77°F). Improper long-term storage can lead to a non-functional battery, which may not be covered under warranty.
  • Fire Risk Awareness: It is important to acknowledge that lithium-ion batteries can pose a fire risk if they are damaged, defective, or improperly charged or handled. Regulatory bodies like the CPSC are actively researching these risks and providing safety guidelines for consumers and businesses.
  • Proper Disposal: Lithium-ion batteries should never be disposed of in regular household trash or general recycling bins. They must be taken to specialized battery recycling facilities or hazardous waste collection centers to ensure they are handled safely and responsibly.
