When to Service Your E-Bike: A Maintenance Schedule Checklist
A little, regular attention helps to prevent problems down the road. Use this handy maintenance schedule and checklist to stay on top of your e-bike's healthstopexcerpt.
Before Every Single Ride: The 2-Minute Safety Check
This quick pre-ride inspection can become second nature.
- Brakes: Squeeze both levers to ensure they are firm and responsive.
- Tires: Give them a quick squeeze. They should feel very firm. Visually inspect for any obvious damage.
- Chain: Glance at the chain. Does it look clean and lightly lubricated?
- Quick Test: Roll the bike a few feet and test the brakes. Turn on the electrical system to ensure the display lights up and the battery has charge.
Weekly (or every 100-150 miles): The Basic Tune-Up
- Check Tire Pressure: Use a pump with a gauge to inflate tires to the recommended PSI found on the tire sidewall.
- Clean the Frame: Wipe down the frame, handlebars, and seat with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime.
- Inspect and Lubricate Chain: Check the chain for dirt. Clean if necessary and apply a fresh coat of bicycle-specific lube.
Monthly (or every 500 miles): The Deeper Dive
- Inspect Brake Pads: Visually check your hydraulic brake pads for wear. If they are worn down to about 1.5mm (the thickness of a US penny), it's time to replace them.
- Check Bolts and Fittings: Gently check the tightness of all major bolts, including wheels, handlebars, stem, seat post, pedals, and cranks.
- Deep Clean the Drivetrain: Use degreaser and brushes to thoroughly clean the chain, cassette (rear gears), and chainrings. A clean drivetrain is an efficient drivetrain.
- Check Electrical Cables and Fenders: Visually inspect all external cables and wiring for signs of fraying, cracking, or damage. Ensure all connections are secure. Check that your fenders are properly secured and not rubbing against the tires.
The First Tune-Up: After 50-100 Miles
- Professional Break-in Service: It is highly recommended to have a certified e-bike mechanic perform a full tune-up after your first 50-100 miles. A professional will ensure everything is adjusted correctly for long-term safety and performance.
Every 6 Months (or every 1,000 miles): The Professional Check-In
- Professional Service: Book a basic service with your local bike shop. They can spot things you might miss.
- Inspect Wheel Spokes: Check that spoke tension is even. A loose spoke can lead to a wobbly wheel.
- Check Bearings: Gently check for play or roughness in the wheel hubs, headset (steering), and bottom bracket (where the pedal arms rotate).
- Battery Health: Check the battery terminals for cleanliness and corrosion.
Annually: The Full Overhaul
- Book a Full Professional Service: This is the most important maintenance event of the year. A mechanic will check and service everything, including parts that are difficult to access at home like internal bearings and motor fittings. This service should also include a software check and update for your electrical system.
By following this schedule, you'll ensure your e-bike remains reliable, safe, and fun to ride for years to come.
